International Medical Graduates

New Zealand's Dental Council sets the standards for dental practice in the country and oversees the registration process for IMGs. Here are some of the main programs and pathways available:

  1. Overseas Registration Examination (ORE):

    • IMGs can apply for the ORE, which is administered by the Dental Council of New Zealand (DCNZ). The ORE consists of three parts:
      • Part 1: A written examination that tests knowledge of New Zealand dental practice standards.
      • Part 2: A practical Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) to assess clinical competence.
      • Part 3: A clinical examination that evaluates an IMG's ability to perform dental procedures on patients.
    • Successful completion of all three parts of the ORE is required to obtain full registration with the DCNZ.
  2. Competent Authority Pathway:

    • IMGs who hold a dental qualification from the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, Canada, Australia, or the United States may be eligible for the Competent Authority Pathway.
    • Under this pathway, candidates can apply for registration with the DCNZ based on their recognized qualifications.
  3. Specialist Pathway:

    • IMGs with recognized specialist qualifications in specific fields of dentistry may apply for registration as specialists. The DCNZ assesses applications on a case-by-case basis.
  4. Supervised Practice:

    • Some IMGs may be required to complete a period of supervised practice in New Zealand, depending on their qualifications and experience.
    • During supervised practice, the IMG works under the supervision of a registered dentist to ensure compliance with New Zealand dental standards.
  5. New Zealand Dental Qualifications:

    • IMGs who do not meet the requirements for direct registration may consider enrolling in a New Zealand dental qualification program, such as a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program.
    • Completion of a New Zealand dental program may lead to eligibility for registration with the DCNZ.

IMGs should carefully review the specific requirements and processes for their chosen pathway and ensure they meet the necessary criteria.
